Anita Sutton

I dropped out of high school when I was 16 years old, but was determined to get my high school diploma while attending night school and working a full time job at the age of 22. It was a huge struggle and sacrifice. I was so proud of myself, the day I walked across the stage as my name was called to receive my diploma.  Currently, I am a Dean of Students at the Urban Science Academy (a Boston Public School) and I also work part-time at Dove Inc. (a domestic violence shelter). Working with young people is such a pleasure for me. I have always encouraged my students to be the best they can be, and strive for success by attending college. I started questioning myself on the words I was preaching to my students. I began to wonder “…how can I encourage them to go to college when I haven’t attended?”  I decided to add to my full load, and register for college and Springfield College Boston seemed to be the right choice for me. I enjoy being at Springfield College; this experience has shaped me into a better person.  All the struggles and the sacrifices I have had to make in order to earn my degree will be well worth it, the day I walk across the stage to receive my bachelor’s degree in Human Services.  That will be a triumphant day.
