Safe Zone and Diversity Intern, Office of Intercultural and Inclusion Student Services at Coastal Carolina University

I currently serve on the Safe Zone LGBTQ+ Ally Training Committee. Within my role on the committee, I have updated training materials and the resource manual, and have presented Safe Zone Trainings to faculty, staff, and students. In addition to my contributions to the Safe Zone Trainings, I also supervise other diversity themed events organized by the Office of Intercultural and Inclusion Student Services such as 'African Drum and Dance Seminar' and 'Gullah Basket Weaving Class'.

Full-time live-in day, evening, weekend, and on-call commitments actively supervising "TIPsters" ages 12-14 years old. I assisted with student arrival and departure day procedures including student transport from Orlando International Airport. I supported the social and emotional well-being of the students by meeting daily with an assigned group of ten students and organizing daily programming and activities for up to 100 students. In conjunction with camp leadership, I managed student conduct issues following Duke TIP guidelines. I worked on a leadership team with five Team Leaders, three Graduate Orientation Assistants, and two professional staff members, and a wider team of 30 Orientation Leaders. I led the Spirit Committee of seven Orientation Leaders in preparation for SROW 2019 focused on the development and teaching of step-based strolls and school spirit chants, and the creation of Coastal Carolina themed pins. I collaborated with two other Team Leaders to develop an educational session proposal for SROW 2019 on 'How Your Personal Identity Affects Your Leadership Experience'. I served as a mentor for six Orientation Leaders by providing small group programming to allow for relationships to form without the pressure of the larger team presence I created training on 'Accepting Your Weirdness' to present to Orientation Leaders to build self-confidence as leaders and encourage authenticity in student interactions.

This research and associated activism addressed the historical inclusion of LGBT students within institutions of higher education, the specific details of Coastal Carolina University (CCU) that encourage diversity and inclusivity, the proposal of a preferred name policy at CCU, limitations to such a policy and solutions to said limitations, as well as goals for future efforts following implementation of the preferred name policy at CCU. Gender Identity, Expression and Diversity: Cultivating Inclusive Spaces
Created in collaboration with the Office of Diversity and Inclusion and student representatives at Coastal Carolina University, the Gender Identity, Expression, and Diversity workshop is designed to promote respect for people's gender identity at CCU and the broader society, and create a more welcoming space for people of all genders. Participants are led through a process whereby they reflect on their own identities and then explore how misunderstanding and mistreating individuals on the basis of gender identity contributes to a culture that invalidates and dehumanizes.
