Beste Kalender
The finest performance came from Beste Kalender as Zerlina. She sang with warmth and had just the right mixture of naivet, spontaneity and artfulness. (Hans de Groot, The WholeNote, 2013) Described as having a warm sound (Claude Gingras, La Presse) and fluid mezzo soprano voice and excellent intonation (Ute Davis, National Capital Opera Society), Beste Kalender has given vocal performances and recitals throughout Turkey and Canada. Recently appearing on stage at the Koerner Hall in the role of Zerlina, in Mozart's Don Giovanni, under conductor Uri Mayer, the Turkish native Torontonian mezzo soprano has been named one of the 2013 Jeunes Ambassadeurs Lyriques du Canada. Her recent performances include Carmen (Carmen, Bizet-Pellegrini Opera), Zia Principessa (Suor Angelica, Puccini-OOTA), Endimione (La Calisto, Cavalli-GGS), Tancredi (Tancredi, Rossini-SOLT), Cornelia (Giulio Cesare, Handel-OBR), Cherubino (Le Nozze di Figaro, Mozart-OBR), Third Lady (The Magic Flute, Mozart-GGS), Mercedes (Carmen, Bizet-SOLT), Chambermaid (The Devil and Kate, Dvorak-OIC) and Ellen (Three sisters who are not sisters, Rorem-GGS). In summer 2011, she also sang the role Susan Valadon for a recording of a new musical titled Toulouse Lautrec by Viennese composer Peter Branka, in Vienna, Austria. Beste holds an M.A. degree from the Department of Psychology at the University of Toronto and a vocal diploma from the Istanbul State Conservatory, under the supervision of Ayse Sezerman Unel, soloist singer at the Istanbul State Opera, Turkey. Having been awarded with The Muriel Cassidy Vocal Scholarship, Mrs. Kalender is in her second year at The Royal Conservatorys Glenn Gould School (GGS) - Artist Diploma Program, studying with Jean MacPhail and Rachel Andrist. In November 2013, Beste will perform at the Jeunes Ambassadeurs Lyriques XXth Gala at the Bourgie Hall of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.
