A recent graduate of Morehouse School of Medicine, Dr. Marcqwon Day, has demonstrated a strong commitment from partnering with underserved populations. His deep passion for community service has led him to multiple projects, including mentoring first year college male students from disadvantaged backgrounds; fundraising for cancer research with his fraternity, Alpha Phi Alpha, Incorporated; tutoring; volunteering at a student-run free clinic for patients in Atlanta; leading a fundraising for a medical missionary trip to Haiti; and more. Through the Primary Care Leadership Program, Dr. Day hosted the diabetes education program at a community health center that serves a rural and underserved Hispanic population in Southern California. Additionally with support from the National Medical Fellowships, Dr. Day spent three years working at the City of Refuge (CoR), a shelter for families experiencing homelessness, where he teaches students about different science topics and leadership skills. Dr. Day plans to continue advancing his ability to solve public health problems from working with the Center for Disease Control and to use this knowledge to implement a violence prevention program within the CoR. Dr. Day also plans to push beyond the confines of the U.S. to continue his global efforts.

Received the Randolph S. Gunter Leaders Award at the Georgia Southern Eagles in Diversity Awards. This is given yearly to one undergraduate student in recognition of outstanding commitment to diversity through leadership and service. This award is granted to an individual that most exemplified the likeness of the late Dr. Gunter as he led in capacity as the director of the Upward Bound and Educational Opportunity Program at GSU.

The NHSC Students to Service Loan Repayment Program provides a stipend to medical students (MD and DO) in their final year of school in return for a commitment to provide primary health care full time for at least 3 years or half time for at least 6 years at an approved NHSC site in a Health Professional Shortage Area of greatest need.

National Botulism Consultation Program Abstractionist at Center for Disease Control
Working as part of the clinical systematic review team assisting in the abstraction of confirmed botulism cases to be graded and used to help drive the national guidelines for the treatment of botulism. Meet with epidemiologists, clinicians and fellow abstractionists in an effort to best characterize the clinical signs and symptoms associated with botulism for earlier diagnosis and treatment in preparation for a potential bioterrorist threat. Current diagnosis is made via lab specimen testing requiring 4-5 days that show the presence of botulinum toxin or growth of bacterial culture consistent with toxin production. Early diagnosis and administration of antitoxin is believed to be associated with better patient outcomes from halting the progression of symptoms caused by the botulinum toxin.

Department of Medical Education Tutor at Morehouse School of Medicine
Assisted fellow medical students in targeted subject areas via individual or group tutoring for both our first and second year curriculum. Modeled and encouraged collaborative study strategies. The DOME is the academic home for a wide variety of backgrounds, degrees, and skill sets who are deeply engaged in educational activities in addition filling to multiple administrative roles. The DOME directs and teaches interdisciplinary M.D. courses :1st year integrated curriculum; Pathophysiology; Fundamentals of Medicine 1, 2, 3; as well as teach in the GEBS, MPH, and Faculty Development programs.

Chairperson & Volunteer at Project Medishare for Haiti, Inc.
Helped coordinate a team of 5 medical students and 3 physicians on a medical mission trip though Project Medishare’s Community Health Program in Thomonde, Haiti. Team collaborated with Haitian physicians, residents, and community health supervisors to host mobile Internal Medicine, Pediatric, and OB/GYN clinics in surrounding towns. Conducted public health survey to identify healthcare needs. Fundraised ~$4000 to subsidize cost of trip for students and physicians.

Primary Care Leadership Researcher at National Medical Fellowships
Executed an independent community service project wherein I revamped the existing Diabetes Education Program at St. John’s Well Child & Family Center, a community health center that serves a rural and underserved Hispanic population in Southern California. Project was composed of a needs assessment followed by interventions that included diabetic consultations, patient education, and fitness regimen. Designed a process for measuring and tracking patient outcomes following participation in the program. Created a CD-rom with lectures in English and Spanish for the patients. Completed over 220 service/learning hours.

Diverse Medical Scholar at National Medical Fellowships
Coordinated an independent community service project that focuses on the high school students at the City of Refuge in Atlanta, GA, which is a non-profit organization for families experiencing homelessness. The medical lecture series included topics ranging from anatomy to substance abuse. The second intervention program developed into a leadership academy consisting of interactive activities based on leadership development, team building, goal setting, conflict management, and community engagement. The final intervention consisted of a youth violence prevention component that highlighted mature and immature defense mechanisms.
