EXCEL Research Scholar at Lafayette College

Assist Dr. John Shaw, Ph.D, J.D., researching and conducting psychology experiments on the topic of alcohol use on college campuses. Work 10 hours a week conducting research, designing experiments, facilitating studies, interpreting results, drafting research reports, and meeting to discuss study goals. A large percentage of the research hours are spent analyzing and interpreting data or designing ways to collect more accurate information, assessing whether results are falsified, as well as discerning gaps in the data that must be investigated further. Expected to co-author any reports produced through the study.

ATTIC Tutor in Economics at Lafayette College

Recommended by faculty due to a demonstrated ability to understand course concepts, interact well with peers, communicate confidently with faculty, and manage time well. Meet weekly with individual students to explain difficult concepts, review incorrect answers on past exams, and introduce new approaches to solving problems on future exams. Charged with maintaining confidentiality and conferring with the students' professor when necessary. Challenged with the task of finding multiple approaches to the same problem and to reword information in a manner that best clarifies the concept for the student. Mentor other students in developing strategies for analyzing the information given so they can develop a clear plan for moving forward, as well as ways to communicate more clearly so that their professors recognize that the student understands the concepts.

Required to make weekly inspections of the residence hall and brief superiors on the state of facilities, the nature of resident interactions, and any observed policy violations. In addition to inspections, responsibilities include weekly paperwork that thoroughly describes interactions in the community, specifically noting any perceived issues in the lives of residents. Frequently tasked with analyzing the information at hand and interpreting the level of intervention that the situation involves. In many instances of policy violation, required to correctly discern the situation and take appropriate action. Charged with maintaining confidentiality in sensitive circumstances. Each mid-year and end-of-year evaluation has highlighted that strengths lie in relaying information; briefings are consistently described as clear, thorough, and accurate, and they are submitted in a timely manner.
