Jessica Hmiel

I was born and raised in New York State. After High School I attended Corning Community College, where I earned my associates. I did very well at CCC and had to make a tough decision on where to pursue my bachelor degree. After weeks of comparing different universities, I decided on Mansfield. Since I reside in Painted Post, N.Y. I am a commuter. I decided on Mansfield because of location, cost, and most importantly, their academic program. I initially came here to pursue my bachelor degree in Early Childhood and Elementary Education. After a bit, I decided teaching wasn't where my heart was anymore. My passion had shifted from helping people academically, to helping them in their everyday lives. That's when I switched to the major of Social Work. For my degree I am required to do a 500 hour internship with a local agency. I have been accepted for placement at Chemung County Child Agency Center. I look forward to the learning experiences ahead of me. I am excited to be able to use my education to assist people in changing their lives for the better. My long term goal is to continue working with children, especially those who have a mental illness.
