Kristin Smith

Student at Georgia State University majoring in English, minoring in Spanish
Literature is my absolute passion. Be it reading during my commute on the train, discussing the importance of symbolism and historical allusions in class, working my shifts at my schools library, scribbling notes about foreshadowing and character development in the margins of the books I read at home, or working on one of my many novels in hopes of sending it off to get published during my down time, my day revolves around books from beginning to end. I find reading, writing, analyzing texts (and even drafting up the occasional essay) immensely enjoyable. I wish to share my love for literature with others for years to come, so I am currently studying at Georgia State University to become an English professor. My lifes aspiration is to one day to be both an accomplished educator and a professional author.

Atlanta Student Investor Club
As ASICs media director, I assisted with club advertising and media promotion. My job was to keep a steady stream of information posted to our pages and build up a stronger online following.

School Climate Committee
As a founding member of the schools climate committee, I met with administration and representatives from each graduating class to formulate plans that would make my high school a better place for both staff and students. This committee planned and completed projects that cleaned up our campus, had staff participate in the positive affirmation of students, and began to implement campaigns that improved the schools public image.

Black Student Union
As the vice president of my schools Black Student Union, I helped draft lesson plans that taught about Black culture and social issues surrounding it. The clubs workload was carried solely by the clubs president and me, so I am proud to say that we were able to optimize what little resources and contacts we had to put on two educational luncheons, a field trip to the African American Museum in Los Angeles, California, and were able to get every single senior in our club medals to wear during graduation.

Drama Club
During my junior and senior years of high school, I served as a member of the theatres technical and stage crew. There I would assist with lighting, sound, set building, painting, scene changes, quick changes, and elementary technology troubleshooting. Occasionally, I would perform dances and skits when the idea of being front and center appealed more than being behind the scenes.

National Honor Society
National Honor Society is a program meant for the top percentage of high school upperclassmen to give back to their community. Each branch of our chapter would arrange service projects that would help enrich our members and the people we would cater to. While in NHS, I was the head of the Theatre Committee and was tasked with recruiting and overseeing volunteers to work all events that took place in our schools theatre. We were tasked with the upkeep of the theatre and served as hosts to all guests.

Link Crew
During my junior and senior years of high school, I had the honor of being a Link Crew Leader to over 40 freshmen. Link Crew is a transitional program that helps freshmen integrate into high school by having upperclassmen (juniors and seniors) provide social, emotional, academic and administrative assistance. I helped plan and lead seminars that taught students how to balance and improve their academic and personal lives, headed campaigns regarding suicide awareness, spoke to administration on behalf of students, and provided tutoring sessions.
