Kyle Dash

Majored in Ecological Studies, Minored in Adventure Recreation
Castleton University, Class of 2020
From Moretown, VT
I graduated from Castleton University with a Bachelor's degree in Ecological Studies in May of 2020. During the Summer of 2019, I did a National Science Foundation internship at the University of South Dakota. As part of my research project, I collected data on canopy cover, tree DBH, and tree species composition at study plot sites to determine the distribution and behavior patterns of American beaver. Additional duties included conducting bird nest surveys to determine how invasive plants influence the nesting behaviors of species of North American birds, and researched cultural, social, and environmental issues of the Midwest. After graduating from college, I spent the next year in AmeriCorps National Community Civilian Corps (AmeriCorps NCCC) performing various community service projects across the Southeast of the United States. While in AmeriCorps NCCC, I received training from the U.S. Forest Service and became a certified Wildland Firefighter. After finishing AmeriCorps NCCC, I spent the next year or so as a Forestry and Prescribed Fire intern in southern Arkansas with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Currently, I am in the process of attaining a Wildland Firefighter position with the U.S. Forest Service in North Carolina at the Uwharrie National Forest.

Student Researcher at NSF Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU): Sustainable RIVER

My partner Ashley Williams and I did research on how tree species richness and abundance is affecting the distribution of American beaver (Castor canadenis) along the Missouri River. Based out of the Department of Sustainability at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, we went out into the field collected data on canopy cover, tree diameter, and tree species at our study sites. During my internship, I have met new people through networking and have witnessed different sides on different cultural, social, and environmental issues in relation to the area. Through various REU program outings and activities, I have broadened my knowledge and respect for the environment from my perspective to the perspective of the indigenous people who were here long before me. On July 30th, my partner and I presented our poster, 'Tree Presence and Species Identity Affect American Beaver Activity Along the Missouri River', at the SD EPSCoR Undergraduate Symposium in Sioux Falls, SD.
