Linda Matthews
From San Antonio, TX
I am a live-long learner dedicated to addressing social injustices in the world. I work with individuals who are oppressed and stigmatized simply for the fact that they have a mental illness. I strive to educate society about the parity of mental and physical health. I encourage those who are diagnosed with a mental illness. I let them know their diagnoses is just as treatable as cancer. There is no shame in having cancer which is a disease that does not discriminate, so why allow mental illness to be any different? Both are diseases, mental illness is a disease of the brain and brain cancer is also a disease of the brain. Why is it "OK" to feel empathy for cancer and not mental illness? This is my life mission to eliminate the stigma around mental illness and suicide prevention through a personal example and education.
