Lorraine Dargis

Majored in Environmental Geochemical Science
SUNY New Paltz, Class of 2015
From New Paltz, NY
I am a recent graduate of the State University of New York at New Paltz with a major in Environmental Geochemical Science, concentrating in Ecology. My short term goals are to attain a Master's of Science in an Ecology or Conservation Biology related field. In particular, I am interested in research labs investigating bird communities' reactions to land use changes. I want to know more about how humans fragment and alter avian habitat and behavior in order to make the best conservation decisions for the future. I am considering a career as a research scientist working for a nonprofit organization or a government conservation career.

Forest Bird Survey Technician at Sharon Audubon Center
I perform point counts at privately owned properties over Northwestern CT. I create maps using ArcGIS and navigate to points using a hand-held GPS. I also interact with landowners and explain why certain birds are nesting and living in these specific habitats. Ultimately, this project complements habitat surveys conducted in 2014. Bird communities will be compared to these habitat-types with the ultimate goal of altering these properties' vegetation communities in order to support as many of-concern bird species as possible.

Research Assistant at SUNY New Paltz
This project is an investigation into veery singing behavior; using a comprehensive collection of veery song samples taken in 2009, we are categorizing different “note” types and comparing and contrasting intra-specific similarities in songs. Our goal is to conduct general research on the veery’s non-territorial, non-sexual “advertising” song. Expected Accomplishments ● Present research in senior seminar (spring 2015) ● Presenting at Ecological Society of America conference (August 2015) ● Write scientific paper, which will be submitted for peer review in animal behavior or ornithology journals in spring 2015
