Mary Purcell was recognized for studying abroad
Part of an intensive study program focused on tropical ecology through a combination of fieldwork and lecture series in order to gain crucial knowledge on the local environment of Little Cayman Island. The information gained was used to develop a two day educational program for schools of the Cayman Islands to include in their public school curriculum.

Alpha Kappa Delta
Worked with various committees to develop and execute all community service events on and off campus (Relay for Life, International Women's Day, etc) for the first time in chapter history. Extensively networked with organizations in the Burlington area, establishing working relationships securing partnership for future events. Through much hard work these service events have raised over $8,000 for charities such as Prevent Child Abuse America and Women Helping Battered Women.

Acted as a public representative of zoo educating the public on a variety of zoo animals. Participated in multiple environmental/conservational efforts on and off the zoo grounds. Efforts included eradicating invasive plants that kill native wildlife and counting local river mussel populations in order to establish pollution levels in the area.

Conducted research on local animals for new exhibitions; Educated visitors on animals within center as well as in the immediate area. Developed interactive programs and activities with other interns, centered around weekly themes – such as geology, weather, or reptiles. Lead educational nature walks with visiting groups.

Assit. Teacher at Wakeman Town Farm
Assistant at local farm for children in first and second grade. Each week there was a new agriculturally based theme, such as weather, sunlight, or seeds. After the lesson, there was an activity so the kids could apply what they learned. For light week, for example, we took prisms and created rainbows, and learned why plants were green.
