Peter Vaillancourt

Majored in Physics And Applied Mathematics & Statistics
Clarkson University, Class of 2014
From Rochester, N.Y.
I am a recent graduate (December 2014) dedicated to pursuing a career that fulfills my passions for research, learning, and personal growth. I am particularly interested in astronomy, physics, and computer science. I have a dream to improve the world around me, and I continue to strive towards that goal. I aspire to someday be a Professor at a research institution where I hope to make a positive impact in the scientific community, the students I teach, and the general public. I specifically desire to be a role model and an inspiration to younger generations who struggle with poverty and other barriers, as I have, and help them to reach their dreams. I was recently working on Undergraduate Research in Astrophysics modeling galaxy clusters with Dr. Joshua Thomas at Clarkson University in collaboration with Dr. Aileen O'Donohue from Saint Lawrence University. I gave an oral presentation on this research at the 2014 Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program (CSTEP) Scholars Annual Statewide Student Conference and won an award for Honorable Mention (2nd place) in the Physical Sciences. I attended the 2014 Joint Meeting of the New York State Section of the American Physical Society and the Astronomy Society of New York and the 110th topical symposium where I won 2nd Place in the poster competition. As a CSTEP Academic Year Research Scholar and Summer Research Scholar, I have also done research in Applied Mathematics with Dr. Joseph Skufca at Clarkson University modeling a pogo stick with applications to locomotion. I have given oral presentations at the 2013 CSTEP Scholars Annual Statewide Student Conference, the 2013 University at Buffalo McNair Research Conference, and the 2013 Summer Symposium on Undergraduate Research Experiences (SURE) at Clarkson University on this research. I have also been a poster presenter at the Mathematics Conference and Competition of Northern New York in 2014.

InterVarsity Christian Fellowship
We are a group of college students from both Clarkson and SUNY Potsdam who traditionally have met weekly to hang out, develop close friendships, and learn more about God. We meet in various smaller study groups throughout the week to spend time studying the Bible and discussing what it means. We also organize fun events like hiking, apple picking, etc. Our group is open to anyone who is interested in learning more about Jesus and making new friends!
