Member of the instructional staff for a high school level percussion ensemble with a student membership of 40+ members. Drum Major at 7th Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps
The sole student-leader of a competitive performance ensemble composed of 97 members, ages 22 and younger. The drum corps travels the United States in competition after spending hundreds of hours rehearsing. Drum corps teaches many skills including: – Consistency in work quality and level of performance – Perseverance and self motivation – Empathy – Time management – Productivity maximization – Ability to quickly learn from previous mistakes and effectively react to critique and criticism to produce optimal results – Communication – Ability to exceed one's own expectations As a leader, my responsibilities include: – Liaison of communication between staff and student membership. Ensure instruction is entirely received and understood by member of the corps – Time management: Ensuring all are on-time and present for every rehearsal block, performance, meals, wake-up/lights-out, ect. – Building personal relationships with all members of the organization to create a comfortable, well-working, environment – Human relations: help maintain happiness and cooperation between members amid what can be stressful rehearsal conditions, hours and living conditions (corps lives/travels together for up to 25 days at a time) – Motivating members to perform at the highest level of excellence attainable – Giving rewards and administering discipline as necessary – Working long hours that often requires additional time, past the typical 7am-12am schedule – Managing all aspects of an organization with 97 student-member (plus additional staff)
