Kelly O'Brien

Lyndon State College, Class of 2015
From Salem, NH
Currently, I am a Senior at Lyndon State College in Lyndonville Vermont studying Electronic Journalism Arts. For the past year I have worked as a photographer, editor, tech board director, video journalist and graphics generator for News 7, the Departments broadcast news operation. I have also worked as a web reporter and web producer which we broaden broadcast stories to the web. Each day, students enrolled in this capstone experience produce a live daily newscast which serves just under 9,000 households in Northeastern Vermont and Northern New Hampshire while concurrently running a full time website. My work at the station has allowed me to sharpen my skills in anticipation of applying for a job in the industry. I have enjoyed editing with Avid NewsCutter and Final Cut Express, working with P2 media and DVC Pro cameras. I am also comfortable using rundown software having worked with iNews first hand. But more importantly, this experience has helped me understand the importance of meeting a hard deadline and how to work well with members in the community and my colleagues. My experience in NewsLINC has prepared me for updating live news to a digital interface. My job as a web reporter consisted of gathering more information for broadcast stories as well as working on an assigned beat topic. I was assigned Tourism and Economy around the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont. I am also proficient in the use of social media as a tool in digital journalism. I love being a part of News7 because we work hard as a team. Each member brings an essential element to every broadcast. We take pride in our shows and learn from our mistakes. Personally, it has been a great opportunity for me to learn and prepare for work at the professional level.
