Teaching Assistant at University of Massachusetts Dartmouth
• Teach one laboratory section of Anatomy & Physiology I, and assist the TA in another section. • Help students to understand the class material and evaluate student performance.
September 2015 - Present
Intern at Long Island University
• Was selected to be part of this competitive internship program to work in the lab of Dr. April Blakeslee. • Assisted graduate students and other interns with their research projects in the field and in the laboratory. • Collected, identified, and dissected grass shrimp under a microscope to survey the presence of an invasive species along the coasts of Long Island and to compare the levels of parasitism among native and invasive grass shrimp species. • Performed laboratory experiments comparing the behavioral differences between the native and invasive species of grass shrimp. • Collected, identified, and dissected snails under a microscope to compare levels and effects of parasitism in the barnacle ecotype and typical ecotype of the snail L. saxatilis. • Supervised other interns and volunteers in the laboratory and in the field.
June 2014 - August 2014
Undergraduate Thesis Research at Long Island University
• Proposed, designed, and implemented an independent research project that sought evidence of competition between native and invasive shrimp species for habitat space. • Collected and identified species of shrimp along the coasts of Long Island to compare habitat preferences and tidal variations between native and invasive species of grass and sand shrimp. • Performed statistical analyses using Systat to find significant trends in collected abundance data. • Collaborated with graduate students, professors, and interns at LIU-Post and Rider University. • Helped mentor three high school students working in the Blakeslee lab at LIU-Post
June 2014 - August 2014
Intern at Rider University
• Helped train new interns and assisted them with all responsibilities. • Worked independently to transport crab samples and to complete any other tasks that needed to be accomplished. • Dissected male and female blue crabs and measured the masses of seminal fluid, spermatophores, and ovaries to compare the reproductive characteristics of blue crabs from different parts of Barnegat Bay. • Completed all tasks listed below in addition to these new responsibilities.
May 2013 - August 2013
Intern at Rider University
• Collected samples of crabs using traps from sites throughout Barnegat Bay and recorded their species, size, sex, molt stage, and reproductive characteristics in order to study effects of shoreline development on blue crab populations. • Otter trawled, and measured and identified all species caught to study effects of shoreline development on species diversity. • Gillnetted, and separated and identified different species of ichthyoplankton caught. • Used cylinder sampling technique and identified and measured organisms caught to compare species diversity and blue crab abundance inside and outside the Sedge Island Marine Conservation Zone in three different habitat types. • Tagged and released adult blue crabs to study their migration patterns. • Monitored brood production of adult female blue crabs held in field enclosures to study effect of food availability and female size on reproduction.
May 2012 - August 2012
Research Assistant at Rider University
• Estimate the number of eggs per unit volume of blue crab brood by measuring broods and counting egg samples under a light microscope. • Dissect male and female blue crabs and measure the masses of seminal fluid, spermatophores, and ovaries to compare the reproductive characteristics of blue crabs from different parts of Barnegat Bay. • Measure and determine the viabilities of individual blue crab eggs from different parts of Barnegat Bay.
