Dennis Conetta
University of Rhode Island, Class of 2015
From Darien, CT
I am currently a senior at the University of Rhode Island where I am a double major in Marine Biology and Wildlife Conservation Biology. Throughout my time at URI I have been fortunate enough to study abroad twice. The winter of my Sophomore year I took a film class in Belize where we compiled a documentary on the countrys sustainable practices and well enforced marine conservation. The fall semester of my Junior year I studied at the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences where I became a certified AAUS and Rescue Diver. In addition to my certifications, I conducted a month long independent research project on the Effects of Parrotfish Herbivory on Coral Diversity and Reef Community Structure. This summer I studied under Graham Forrester as a RI EPSCoR SURF Fellow. In those ten weeks we compiled and analyzed data from both a volunteer and professional reef monitoring programs to see if volunteer science is a viable option for long term ecological studies, such as coral reef monitoring. After presenting my poster at the SURF conference I was lucky enough to join Dr. Forrester on Guana Island in the BVIs to participate in reef restoration, whelk surveys, and reef monitoring surveys.
