♦ Performs legal research utilizing law library and computerized research programs; compiles legal research findings into legal memoranda, giving preliminary legal opinions on specific issues. ♦ Coordinates ordinance case prosecution process to include: prepares all files, researches case summaries, maintains bench trial calendar, communicates with Clerk of Court, City departments, and attorneys to assure efficient handling of cases; represents City in ordinance proceedings. ♦ Appears in court weekly to prosecute ordinance cases; utilizes independent judgement in dismissing cases, settling cases, or referring cases to the attorney for bench trial when representing the City in Ordinance Court. ♦ Maintains and updates computerized docket system for attorney, calendars, maintains updated case lists and notifies attorneys of deadline dates related to lawsuits. ♦ Drafts legal documents and files with court clerk. ♦ Researches deeds, liens and other documents. ♦ Prepares notices of new lawsuits to City Council, insurance carrier, and Risk Manager. ♦ Maintains closed files and filing system for closed lawsuit files. ♦ Deals with confidential matters and is held to strict standard of confidentiality related to lawsuits, ordinance cases, and research projects. ♦ Analyzes and evaluates court systems and collection processes; devises new programs for prosecuting and collecting in ordinance cases; implements new programs as appropriate. ♦ Performs other related duties as assigned.
