Jaime Staengel

Member of The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi
From St. Louis, Mo.
I am currently in the Finance Leadership Development Program at Anheuser-Busch. In this role, I have the opportunity to rotate through 3 different finance functional teams and gain cross-functional experience with executive exposure. In my first rotation as part of the Brewery Control team, I have ownership over the balance sheet accounts for production of variety pack products, which involves collaborating with Procurement, Innovation, and Material Resource Planning to ensure product costing aligns with financial standards, developing a PowerBI tool to gain insight into the conversion of component product into finished good variety packs, conducting traditional control tasks such as monthly reconciliation of balance sheet accounts, and leveraging SAP knowledge in an effort to decrease balance sheet accounts to a healthy level. Key learning from this rotation is that "today's balance sheet is tomorrow's P&L." Prior to this position I served as a Senior Analyst, Sales Intelligence at Anheuser-Busch, where I was responsible for ensuring the best tools and insights were available to effectively identify opportunities to improve AB ONE, Anheuser-Busch's Sales and Distribution Business, sales execution and performance. I fulfilled my responsibilities through knowledge of finance and data science, as well as business intelligence tools such as PowerBI. As part of the role, I conducted analyses of AB's sales, share, and industry trends. This role required knowledge of differences in local markets as AB ONE locations span the country and face different distribution and market challenges. I am a 2018 graduate of the Simon Business School at the University of Rochester where I earned a Master of Science in Finance. My undergraduate years were spent at Murray State University where I received a Bachelor of Science in Economics and a Bachelor of Arts in German while minoring in Mathematics and Business Administration. During my time in college and graduate school I pursued research and have been published in The Kennesaw Tower - Undergraduate Foreign Language Research Journal and the Journal of Business Cases and Applications. At Murray State, I served as Student Vice-President of Phi Kappa Phi and attended the Phi Kappa Phi 2015 Student Vice-President Leadership Summit in Salt Lake City, Utah. I helped our chapter initiate the Phi Kappa Phi Student Vice-President Children's Book Drive. I was a Phi Kappa Phi Fellowship Recipient which helped me focus on my studies and succeed while in graduate school. I hope to remain involved with Phi Kappa Phi as a working professional and volunteer with the society when possible!

Business Translation as a Building Block for Career Success
Speaker at Women in Data Science (WiDS) Charlotte 2021 Conference - Abstract - When moving from the world of academics in college to the “real-world” of the workplace, new data science practitioners may find themselves struggling to convey data science methods and tools to the business problems facing the company. In this session, techniques for how to translate a given business problem into a data science question, and then the results of data science inquiry back into a business-focused answer are shared. The importance of this skill is critical for a variety of reasons, one of which is if data science is going to become fully embedded into informing companies’ decisions, it must have credibility from business partners in finance, sales, supply chain, and more. The session provides an anonymized case study based on a real-world problem of revenue forecasting. After prior organizational efforts tried traditional regression and time series models yielding sub-optimal forecasts, a breakthrough came with use of Generalized Linear Models (GLM) and data science tools. The case study reviews how the business problem could be translated into a data science question, leading to use of the GLM approach, and then how this less-intuitive model output was translated back into digestible output for senior leadership.

Community Financial Services Bank’s impact on the community through succession planning
The purpose of this case study is to determine the importance of succession planning at community banks. Community banks face a unique set of difficulties. Identifying, retaining, and training talent are particularly burdensome for these small-town banks. Despite these challenges, it is important for banks to strategize and develop succession plans to ensure that their future is sound. This paper analyzes the succession plan established at Community Financial Services Bank (CFSB), a community bank located in Benton, Kentucky with ties across the Western Kentucky region. Interviews and research conducted on CFSB were used to analyze the potential problems faced by community banks. Particular attention is given to the board of directors, the bank employees, and the community as a whole in order to understand how the bank’s succession plan can lead to growth. Succession planning is typically put on the backburner for many community banks. CFSB, however, has developed employees within their bank in order to maintain their unique culture. CFSB strives to bring employees in at younger ages and with less education at lower level positions with the intent to train and educate them. CFSB’s involvement in Murray State University has provided them with a unique talent pipeline.

Die Münzen des Fortschritts: Eine Analyse der Währungsunion 25 Jahre später
In this article, I challenge the notion that the Währungsunion, or currency union between East and West Germany, was unsuccessful. Through synthesizing sources from the 90s, research from the 25th anniversary year of German unity, and concepts from microeconomic theory, a more holistic view of the rushed Währungsunion arises, with respect to both its social costs and economic benefits. Despite the human costs of the Währungsunion, such as higher unemployment rates and social discontent, the argument I subsequently raise is that the rushed Währungsunion offered the best alternative for Germany in 1990, especially in consideration of the poor economic situation in the German Democratic Republic at the time and the intense social pressure for currency union.
