Jessica Snyder

Majored in Criminology, Minored in Women's And Gender Studies, Psychology, And Sociology
Wilkes University, Class of 2019
From Mountain Top, Pa.
As a strong supporter of womens rights, I am dedicated to helping women overcome the adversities that they continue to face in society. While studying at Wilkes University, I have had the incredible opportunity of presenting at multiple conferences as well as working alongside faculty members who are researching the effects of feminism, sexism, and activism on young women. Presenting my own independent research on intimate partner violence and child marriage in the United States, as well as presenting as a co-author on research regarding feminism, internal efficacy, and activism, has allowed me to broaden my knowledge on feminist philosophy and womens issues. My relevant coursework in family violence, womens history, womens and gender studies, and the sociology of minorities has given me a unique intersectional perspective on womens status in society and the overlapping patterns of oppression that have evolved over time. Raising awareness about sex trafficking victims alongside the Red Sand Project, as well as raising donations for shelters such as the Ruths Place and Al Beech West Side Food Pantry, has enabled me to work closely with community members and fellow Wilkes students. Providing assistance to community organizations, strengthening community ties, and raising awareness about the hardships that women face is a rewarding experience. Graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Criminology, coupled with minors in Psychology, Sociology, and Womens and Gender Studies, I aspire to advocate for womens rights and extend aid to women who are victims of sexual violence and intimate partner violence. It is my hope to hone in on my passion, education, and personal experiences to help IPV and sexual violence victims overcome their traumatic experiences.

Wilkes University Pop-Up Food Pantry
As a University service project, I and other members of Psi Chi contributed to the ordering, setup, and distribution of food to college students. Since college students are one of the most vulnerable populations to food insecurity, we decided to have several open tables of fresh food for college students to stop by and grab for free.

Wilkes Big Event
As part of the Wilkes Big Event, I and other incoming Wilkes students participated in a service activity for Ruth's Place by extending aid to the women and workers in the shelter. As a team, we completed chores that the women in the shelter typically had to do after a long work day. While we were there, we also learned more about Ruth's Place, the women who seek shelter, their struggles with homelessness and jobs, and intimate partner violence.

Sexual Violence, Hyper-masculinity, and Sexual-Dysfunctional Beliefs
Sexual violence is a prevalent problem worldwide that disproportionately affects women. While hyper-masculinity has been shown to be a primary factor in violence against women (sexual violence, IPV, etc.), this paper uses feminist theory to pull out the specific components of hyper-masculinity that perpetuate sexual violence against women. Upon researching the connections to hyper-masculinity, it is noted that sexual-dysfunctional beliefs regarding sexual scripts or the "rules of attraction" that establish interactions among men and women significantly impact rape culture.
