Provides disaster mental health counseling services to survivors of natural and man-made disasters. Uses psychological first aid techniques and strategies while assisting people in the immediate aftermath of a crisis to reduce initial distress and to foster short and long-term adaptive functioning. Conducts initial interviews and assesses the nature of the client's problem and ensures that the client has the tools necessary to function. Refers clients to the appropriate outside agencies or facilities within the community if appropriate. Through personal visits and telephone, contacts determine the appropriateness of local programs or facilities for referral of clients. Ensures that disaster victims are provided psychoeducational information and other essential need items and refers survivors to longer-term services as needed. Provides face to face counseling in most cases as well as telephonic and video-based counseling services for those clients that are in remote locations. If sheltering is not available provides the survivors short term housing vouchers through the American Red Cross.
