February, 08 2018 - DePauw UniversityIn the summer of 2018, I was the Undergraduate Policy Intern for the Rails to Trails Conservancy at their headquarters in Washington D.C. This internship not only gave me a large insight the day-to-day operations of an environmental nonprofit but also how to formulate policy research and strategy. My tasks as an intern included:
-executing daily research on transportation funding projects across U.S.
-understanding RTC's mission and role in the political and environmental sphere
-attending Congressional hearings and engaging with legislators
-categorizing existing trails into congressional districts using demographic info
-utilizing policy databases such as Quorum
I also spearheaded a personal project centering state trail caucus development and state government spending, which included making personalized legislative sheets to hand out to policy makers with information about trails in their district. These sheets were personalized based on the political leanings and and top issues of each legislator.
During my semester abroad in Brussels, I am interning at the European Network on Cultural Management and Policy. ENCATC is a non-profit organization, co-funded by the European Union, that is comprised of a network of over 130 institutions concerned with preserving arts and culture. ENCATC connects member organizations with opportunities in the cultural sector, and provides programming to educate about the importance of arts and culture. During my 12 week long internship, I will be
-Assisting with the publication of PRAXIS, and online student magazine that helps connect students with professional opportunities
-Performing basic communications tasks, such as sending emails, often in French
-Developing sustainability initiatives for ENCATC and its member organizations
I was a summer Intern in the Alternative Fuels and Environmental Management Department. I assisted with testing hazardous waste samples for PCB's, BTU Heating Value, pH, chlorine, and ash. I also assisted the environmental manager in making sure that operations comply with state and federal environmental standards.
