Melissa Navarro

Majoring in Education
San Diego State University
From San Diego, CA
Melissa Navarro is a third year doctoral student in the joint Ph.D. program in education at San Diego State University and Claremont Graduate University. Her research interests revolve around the need to prepare critically conscious dual language educators on the sociopolitical, ideological, cultural and linguistic aspects of teacher preparation in general, and science education specifically. Melissa is the Spanish science methods course instructor for the multiple subject credential in the Department of Dual Language and English Learner Education (DLE) at SDSU. Navarro also currently works as a research assistant with Dr. Felisha Herrera Villarreal in her recently funded NSF grant that examines STEM major students who started at a community college and transferred to a 4-year minority serving institution with the same STEM major. Furthermore, Navarro serves as a program coordinator and data analyst for Project CORE, a 1.5 million dollar federal grant that prepares pre-service and in-service teachers on how to effectively deliver the Common Core State Standards and the 2012 ELD Standards to multilingual learners with her faculty mentor, Dr. Cristina Alfaro. Navarro was chosen for the California State University Chancellors Doctoral Incentive Program (CDIP), a program that aims to increase the number of promising doctoral students applying for future CSU faculty positions by offering financial assistance in the form of a loan and mentorship by CSU faculty. Her most recent award nominated by the faculty in her program is the "SDSU/CGU Joint Program Achievement Award 2017" because her work and scholarship "exemplify the mission of the program, namely, to develop scholars who are committed to research on democratic schooling, social justice and equal educational outcomes for all students, as well as the improvement of educational systems serving diverse communities." Lastly, Navarro has presented in over 10 local, state and nation wide conferences.
