January, 07 2020 - Verified by SUNY CantonI manage the Sterile Processing department for CRMC. I am responsible for the dept. payroll, scheduling, ordering, staffing and budget. I supervise the day to day operations and facilitate training when and where it is needed to comply with local and state regulations as well as AAMI and AORN standards. I also review and update company policies and procedures pertaining to Reprocessing and report to the infection control committee any necessary changes needed to insure patient safety.
I still decontaminate, sort, package, and sterilize instruments. I also clean, and high level disinfect all of the flexible ENT, and Urology scopes for the practice. I have an office off of the department where I stay on top of all of the logs(BI's, sterilization lists, maintenance records, work orders, mfg.IFU,etc.) for the practice. I service many different specialties within the practice such as ENT, Urology, Dermatology, General Surgery, Plastic surgery, ID, and ophthalmology. It is definitely a juggling act, on both the clinical side as well as the administrative side. I am embracing the challenge however, and know that this job is making me a more well rounded technician. I look forward to many more years in this exciting, ever so important career!
I was trained on the job at this hospital when I first started in 2004. In March of 2008, I got certified through IAHCSMM. Although I only had the title of Technician, I worked alone on the night shift 3-11pm and ran the entire department by myself. I cleaned, sorted and assembled instrument sets. I also sterilized these sets. I decontaminated the IV, feeding, PCA, and Kendell pumps. I also decontaminated commodes from all units in the hospital. I then delivered these items to the units as needed. I performed the monthly cleaning on all the autoclaves and cart washers. I also placed orders for materials needed in the department daily and set up the OR case carts for the following days surgeries. For a 3 month span, I also reprocessed GI scopes for the GI doctors. Overall, this is where I learned the basics and the skills I acquired at CRMC got me to where I am now in my career.
