A minimum GPA of 3.25 is required for the continuation of this scholarship. Ms. Waner was house mother for several years to residents of Fentem Hall. This scholarship was established in her honor and memory by her daughter and son-in-law, Eleanor and Burt Dedmon.

“The Bad Place Is Other People: An Intertextual Analysis of “No Exit” and NBC’s The Good Place” | UCO LANGUAGE AND LINGUISTICS STUDENT CONFERENCE | 10 November 2018

Within the witty, smart, and philosophy-based humor of the first season of NBC’s sitcom The Good Place, the philosophy of Jean Paul Sartre is one of the show’s heaviest influences despite never being referenced outright. Both The Good Place and “No Exit” take the concept of Hell, as well as their shared setting of Hell in disguise, and subverts it through their use of character traits and dialogue to show that true Hell is our interactions with others and our own tendency toward self-deception or “bad faith”. This presentation will focus on the similarity of setting, dialogue, and characters between the two works.

Framing Narratives: Interacting with Literature and Photography (Honors Thesis)

A thesis exploring the impact and influence of the newly formed medium of photography––the Daguerreotype––on the literary moment from Romanticism to Realism. A short story from each of the following authors spanning from Romanticism to Realism––Edgar Allan Poe, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Henry James, and Charlotte Perkins Gilman––were analyzed through the lens of photography theory and then turned into photographic recreations. This was presented at the Spring 2018 Honors Showcase.
