Brett Barthman

Majoring in Animal Science
Iowa State University
From Milford, IA
I have been passionate about medicine since middle school, specifically orthopedics and surgery. My uncle was an orthopedic surgeon and I was always fascinated to hear about what he would do at work. As I went through high school and got to college, my interests had changed to computer science. It fascinates me with the way things work and are put together. Following that fixation and my obsession with life sciences, I decided to go back to by my uncles field and pursue medicine. I consider it to be the greatest opportunity to use this passion and skills to assist in the well-being of people. As a doctor, I would be in a team setting where I can work with others in my field to collaborate and work together to conquer tasks. It would not only challenge me mentally but also physically. Its something that I will do for the rest of my life with room for growth. Being able to have diversity in what I do and be full of people that have the same drive for science and discovery is of the utmost importance. After graduation, I plan to complete a masters in biomedical sciences at Iowa State University followed by medical school at Carver College of Medicine with emphasis in orthopedics. Working as an undergraduate research assistant, I've gained valuable experience and skills in the lab that will translate to medical school and into my career. I'm capable of running multiple complex tests and machines such as: Diffusion chamber Protein assays Centrifuge Other life skills that I have gained are: problem-solving communication And teamwork abilities. These are all a necessity in the medical profession when dealing with patients and other doctors on a daily basis. If you want to meet up to chat about my pursuit for medicine or some insight on what the preparation for medical school is like (or even my nerdiness for computers), please feel free to send me an email.
