Joseph Barnes

My career in public safety started over two decades ago with the Stone Mountain Park Police. While working for them, I worked in both sworn and non-sworn capacities. My assignments included communications officer, park ranger and finally full-time police officer. In 2000, I went to work for the City of Snellville Police. During my time with Snellville, I obtained my POST General Instructor, POST Firearms Instructor, TASER Instructor and POST Field Training Officer certifications. I gained a wealth of experience as a DUI Task Force officer, fatal/serious injury accident investigator, patrol supervisor, field training coordinator and department training instructor. I also managed many of the department's community relation initiatives including the Snellville Citizen's Police Academy, Snellville Police Explorers and Snellville Public Safety Night (National Night Out). Since 2010, I have worked for the Gwinnett County School Police. While working here, I have completed my advanced POST Law Enforcement certification and POST Senior Instructor certification. I am currently working to obtain my POST Master Instructor certification as an adjunct instructor for the Georgia Public Safety Training Center. As part of my training responsibilities, I manage the department's TASER training program and employee awards recognition program. My position also provides complete law enforcement services, including patrol and criminal investigations, to a cluster of several schools. Additionally, I am continuing to work on police/community relations as the creator and manager of the school system's law enforcement explorer program for local youth. I have completed a bachelor's degree in sociology from the University of Georgia and a master's degree in public affairs from the University of Missouri. I am working on my Ph.D. in Leadership (Criminal Justice) from the University of the Cumberlands.
