Kerren Segal

Majored in Sociology, Minored in Sustainability Studies
Muhlenberg College, Class of 2018
From Silver Spring, MD
I am passionate about our Earth and all things related to sustainability. I seek to conduct sociological research on environmental issues and their intersections with social and economic inequalities. Through my education in Sociology and Sustainability Studies, I have developed a strong interest in issues such as environmental racism, sustainable urban development and affordable housing, equitable and accessible health care, and the dual challenges of global food waste and food insecurity. I have used my strengths to: -Plan and execute events on campus that promote students' individual behavior changes regarding food sustainability, alternative transportation, and waste reduction. -Conduct research on the causes and consequences of food waste on a global scale, with specific focus on the different occurrences of food loss in developed countries compared to developing countries. -Design a sociological research project on effective strategies and influential factors for successful student-led sustainability initiatives on college campuses, which I then presented at the 14th Annual Sociology & Anthropology Senior Symposium at Muhlenberg College on May 2, 2018. Im known for being an excellent organizer and planner of adventures. I love international travel and have an independent spirit. I spent a semester abroad in Fall 2016 at Goldsmiths College, University of London. During my three months abroad, I visited nine different countries and traveled solo to Greece, Netherlands, and Iceland. My travel fostered a greater sense of independence, self-reliance, and adaptability which I will use to excel in my career.
