Peggy Hawkins

Majored in Health Informatics
Oregon Institute of Technology, Class of 2018
From Wilsonville, OR
I am passionate about making health management easier for patients, and systems easier to use for health care professionals. I am inspired to pursue a carrier in health informatics by one patient I will never forget. This patient was mistakenly diagnosed with cancer. One of our radiologists was examining the patient's CT and was surprised that the tumor in the patient was diagnosed as cancerous. It took over a week to find there was an error in the patient's past records and he did not have cancer! Our radiologist called the patient and found out that he had sold his home, his cars, and broke up with his fiance. He had also moved so that he could have access to a more robust health care system to treat his "cancer". His records were so disjointed that the mistaken diagnosis had followed him for over a year. This sort of scenario is completely intolerable. We have the best scientists, doctors, and technology in the world. I want to work to make sure that every person has access to the best health care our country has to offer, and have the peace of mind that they are getting appropriate treatment.

Health Karma
A research project to further the discussion about how we can fix our healthcare system. There is an estimated 80% of people in the US who worry about our healthcare and we have good reason. Healthcare costs rise at an unpredictable rate and we have lower life expectancy rates than other major countries. The goal of this project is to inspire curiosity, spark conversation, and expand understanding of the costs and values in healthcare systems comparatively. It is through increased access to information which is available in an easy to understand format that helps Americans decide which health costs are reasonable and which are not. When policy makers propose a law, or change to policy that will alter the cost to value of healthcare delivery, the American voters have an improved background to vote according to their best interests. Policy can also be influenced by the power of a popular voice through public speaking, petitions, social media, writing articles, reports, and a consumer driven movement.
