A Counting Problem in Combinatorics and Hypergraph Theory
In this paper we establish a solution to a specific problem on counting arrangements of billiard balls set in a billiard rack. Namely, the parameters were that one-ball is fixed at the top, the eight-ball at the center, and solids and stripes alternate around the perimeter. This challenge was initially considered a basic combinatorics problem, but we chose to view it from the perspective of graph theory as we realized the difficulties in establishing a simple means of counting arrangements. After trying various methods, we ultimately utilized an algorithm implemented through a software program to produce the result of 460,800.
