Thomas Fisher

Majoring in Chemistry, Minoring in Psychology
Cedarville University, Class of 2018
From New Holland, PA
I was raised with the solid morals and hefty work ethic of the Amish-Mennonite community in Lancaster, PA. Growing up on a farm, I learned responsibility and acquired a farmers grit while manuring-out horse stalls, butchering chickens, and growing vegetables. Although I felt close ties with my home community, I was inspired by my father to move beyond my comfort zone to develop my personal skills and interests. I temporarily left my community to attend Cedarville University and pursue my goal of a career in medicine. My interest in the human mind urged me to minor in Psychology, and my intrigue for hidden patterns in the physical universe led to a major in Chemistry.

Carpenter at Smucker Brothers Construction

Smucker Brothers Construction is an Amish owned home improvement contractor specializing in deck construction and home remodeling. Tasks included sawing lumber, painting, framing, and roofing. My Amish coworkers established a strong foundation for my philosophy of work. They taught me to invest time creating outstanding quality rather than hurrying to produce lower quality. Most significantly, they taught me to work hard.

Sales and Marketing Specialist at Lancaster County Dairy

Lancaster County Dairy provides fresh dairy and juice products to Philadelphia. While working there, my responsibilities included preparing fresh juices, delivering merchandise, coordinating retail sales, and managing employees. The most memorable aspect of my time there was how my co-workers laughed and had fun at work. This job showed me that working with a cheerful attitude can transform the work environment and improve productivity.

Waiter at Dutch Eating Place

The Dutch Eating Place is "one of Reading Terminal Market's most iconic eateries," (according to RTM) serving a large variety of Pennsylvania Dutch dishes including apple cinnamon French toast, chicken pot pie, and apple dumplings. I coordinated with the team to ensure customer satisfaction in each aspect of our service, including a welcoming atmosphere and scrumptious meals. My primary responsibility was to take and prepare orders at takeout. This position required rapid and efficient communication with kitchen staff and hundreds of customers every day. The most challenging moments were rectifying mistakes and miscommunications with an unhappy customer. During these situations, I learned to think quickly under pressure to solve a problem.

Farm Hand at Lapp Valley Farm

Lapp Valley Farm is family-owned farm known for its silky, smooth ice cream made from Jersey cow milk. I began working part-time at age twelve, but increased to full-time when I was fourteen. During this transition, I was given full responsibility of the newborn calves as well as landscape and building maintenance. I also helped milk the cows every twelve hours and assisted with crop cultivation and harvesting. Waking up at four o’clock in the morning or working all night during harvest was not easy, but I enjoyed my job. I learned that difficult tasks are often the most rewarding ones.
