Ethics Bowl
Ripon Colleges Ethics Bowl team competed in the Midwest/Great Lakes Regional Ethics Bowl Tournament during the fall semester via Zoom. Representing Ripon in the four-round, nine-hour competition were team captain Mohammad Nafisi 21 of Bushehr, Iran; Caroline Flesch 23 of Delavan, Wisconsin; Caitlin Marsch 24 of West Bend, Wisconsin; Aaron OHalloran 24 of Oshkosh, Wisconsin; and Charlotte Tornee 21 of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Ethics Bowl competitions are organized each year by the Association of Professional and Practical Ethics. Because of the pandemic, this was the first time the regional tournament was held remotely via Zoom. Many teams had members scattered across the country. Even the moderators and judges for each round were connecting from across the Midwest. Judges included corporate compliance officers, lawyers, judges, professors and health care professionals. After nine hours in front of a computer screen, Zoom fatigue was a pervasive side effect of the tournament. This years Ripon team was coached by Paul Jeffries, chair of the Department of Philosophy and Religion and interim director of the Environmental Studies Program. I am very proud of how well our team did in this years competition, especially in light of the fact that this was the first event for so many members of our team, Jeffries says. They held their own against teams that were filled with students who had been involved in ethics bowl competitions for three to four years. I look forward to how well they will do next year.
