An Experimental Examination of Factors that Facilitate Correction for Implicit Biases Toward Substance Abusers
Working with Dr. Kevin Zabel from the Psychology Department, we wanted to examine how a person's negative implicit attitude affected their behavior towards a populations, specifically substance abusers. Concentrating on the MODE model, which presents that motivation will influence whether or not an individual will correct for their bias, we observed how motivation, introspection, and self affirmations were interacting and affecting one's likelihood to correct for their biases. Our results suggested that individuals that received the Self Affirmation, Introspection condition were more likely to correct for their biases compared to any other condition (i.e, Control, Self Affirmation Only, Introspection Only, Introspection, Self Affirmation)
