To me, mechanical engineering encompasses more than just detailed design. Rather, the discipline includes all of the processes that are required to bring an idea from concept to final product. These steps are incredibly difficult, and equally as important as detailed design and analysis. With an understanding of detailed design, the project timeline, manufacturing processes, assembly requirements, and the development stage of a design, one develops a holistic view of the product development lifecycle. This knowledge is not only imperative to the mechanical engineering field, but absolutely necessary to solve the engineering challenges of today and tomorrow.
