Alissa Pradera

Majoring in Art Bfa, Minoring in Therapeutic Arts
University of Tampa, Class of 2025
From Tampa, Florida
Born and raised in Tampa, Florida, Alissa Pradera is an emerging fine artist. Her realistic two-dimensional artwork sparks discussions about trauma and the inevitable suffering that comes with being human. By allowing audiences to relate to her personal story, she encourages them to recognize the beauty in vulnerability. Although charcoal is her preferred medium, she also works with oils, acrylic paintings, graphite, and other mixed media. In 2025, Pradera will graduate from the University of Tampa with a BFA and a minor in Therapeutic Arts. She exhibited her work in two different venues: the Scarfone/Hartley Gallery in 2023 and 2024, and the Tampa Museum of Art in 2021. Pradera is a two time consecutive collegiate scholarship recipient from the Gasparilla Festival of the Arts for March 2023, and April 2024.

2024 Gasparilla Festival of the Arts Collegiate Scholarship Recipient Issued by: Gasparilla Festival of the Arts In April of 2024, I was one of 5 recipients of the 2024 Gasparilla Festival of the Arts collegiate scholarship for $3,000. This marks my receiving of this honor for the second consecutive year. The scholarship is awarded based on an artist's demonstrated talents and pursuit of an education and career in the visual arts. I submitted five artworks which can be found on the Personal Works and Academic Course Work pages of my website. It is indeed a privilege to have the opportunity to represent both the University of Tampa and today's emerging artists once more. To continue to be able to share my work with the Tampa Bay community, establish connections with individuals in the art world today, and have supporters who are willing to contribute to my education in the arts means everything and more.

Truisms of a 20 Year Old
This is a multi-iteration series. The project began as an artist book produced in the fall of 2023, made with handwritten text, colored plastic sheets, and printed black and white original photos. Since then, a video and four painted works have been added to the collection. Conceptually, the series as a whole draws inspiration from the Truisms (1977) produced by contemporary neo-conceptual artist and writer Jenny Holzer. Mirroring Holzer’s use of language and simple compositions, I created my own aphorisms that summarize several “truths” I have discovered in the 20 years of my life thus far. In my painting iterations, I used oil paints and clear acrylic sheets etched with text using lasercutting processes. Each painting has a direct connection to a particular trauma or memorable moment from my life, which ties in with the audacious statement that is associated with each piece. The use of acrylic created a link to the series’ initial creation as an artist book and its usage of plastic sheets. The layer of etched text rests on top of the painting, much like a contact lens sits on top of a corena, requiring spectators to peer around and through the text in order to see the painted image that lies beneath it. This is related to the observation that because of our strong feelings of hope, love, or desire, people frequently choose to ignore the obvious signs, cautions, and facts that are put in front of them, regardless of how damaging or unpleasant the end result may be. I want my work to bring attention to the harsh realities that affect a great number of people and are frequently a part of the human experience, but are rarely spoken. I hope for younger audiences understand that they are not alone in experiencing such circumstances, and that these realities are just a natural part of growing up. Pain: The Series
During my senior year at the Academy of the Holy Names, I took the Portfolio Honors art course. In the course I was tasked to create an art series of my choosing. From January - April of 2021, I created Pain: The Series. This series consists of three artworks all reflecting the traumas I faced in relation to my gastrointestinal health during my high school career. This collection of work is most important to me in my entire art portfolio as it tells a story of the great challenges I faced during this period of my life mentally and physically. I produced this series in hopes of calling attention to the poor healthcare system in todays world, but also pay homage to the lows I experienced that shaped me into the woman I am today.
