Andrea Bourke
Georgia Institute of Technology, Class of 2019
From Edgewater, Md.
I am currently a sophomore at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, Massachusetts studying to earn a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering and a Bachelor's Degree in Architectural Engineering. I am working two part-time jobs at WPI, one as a Peer Learning Assistant at Washburn Shops, and the other as Student Sustainability Coordinator at WPI Facilities. This past summer I attended summer classes at Anne Arundel Community College to earn transfer credit for a future MBA.
In the past I have worked as a Karate Teacher, a Page at Anne Arundel County Public Libraries, and as an entrepreneur in lawn care. I am an Ambassador Girl Scout, and in senior year of high school I earned my Gold Award (Girl Scout's equivalent of the Eagle) by planning and installing a 1,000 square foot rain garden, distributing how-to brochures to local communities, and creating posters. I graduated Magna Cum Laude from high school and participated in the Severn Fellow's Program, where I designed a Gold LEED certified academic building addressing the needs of my high school.
In addition to my work as a Girl Scout, my volunteer experience includes working in the pantry at the Lighthouse Shelter, participating in Severn School's Z-club as member and executive, and in college as a member of the Student Green Team. My interests include martial arts (kung fu and karate), volleyball, archery, jewelry making, camping, and kayaking.
I am determined to make an impact on the world. I think that humanity has a bright future if it can tap sustainable reserves of all kinds. I enjoy creating things, which I think is the main reason I wanted to become an engineer. I can't wait to use my imagination to bring forward new ideas or resurrect old ones.
