The National Merit Scholarship Corporation awards 15,000 top-ranked students across the nation with their designation of National Merit Finalist each year. National Merit Finalists are chosen on the basis of their PSAT scores, SAT scores, and a small application filled out in a student's senior year of high school. I was awarded Finalist status in the spring of 2014, and was given a scholarship at Wheaton for this accomplishment.

Debate Team
As a part of the debate team, I have learned to adapt quickly and calmly while abiding by a set of stringent standards. This exercise has been beneficial to me in pursuit not only of better philosophy, but in my personal ability to articulate where I stand on crucial issues which impact each of us. I look forward to eventually aiding in the lecture and education of new debaters on our largely student-run team, and to a storied career with Wheaton Debate.

Strongholds Support Groups
I joined a Strongholds Support Group my freshman year, looking for a support and accountability group, and I found a spiritual backbone that would give me help, hope, and friendship all year. Since then I have moved to being a co-leader of a new group, and have made every effort to offer that same family to another group of friends, with God as my help. I am a member of an army that advances on its knees.

Financial Aid Office Assistant at Wheaton College
My time with the financial aid office at Wheaton has been remarkably informative. In contributing to the office's organizational efforts and maintaining confidentiality, the work I have done there is the most professional I have yet performed. Answering to callers, I have learned to represent Wheaton College as its spokesman for the financial aid department, which has helped me to mature and grow. Associating myself with the wonderful coworkers I have in the department has also allowed me not only to understand and appreciate the office environment, but to see the ways in which that environment changes when it is sanctified by God.

Volunteer at New Community Church
New Community Church, my home church, allowed me to volunteer with them extensively throughout high school. All together, I was able to accumulate over 450 hours of volunteer service with them over a period of about two and a half years. This volunteer work happened all over the church, finding me behind the scenes operating audiovisual technology for services, in childcare running Sunday school, and even performing for worship services on the rhythm guitar. My favorite experience with the church, however, was the opportunity I had to host services, which involved speaking briefly to the congregation. I would introduce myself and the church, and talk about the values and upcoming events of New Community Church. Hosting was a great chance for me to improve my qualities as a confident orator and comfort in front of crowds.
January 2013 - July 2015
Custodian at New Community Church
I worked one or two evenings each week, eventually leading the cleaning crew on Friday nights. When leading the crew, I determined the distribution of labor given the nightly set of duties. When working alone, I learned to self-motivate and keep working late into the night. Being a custodian has taught me to self-manage in a variety of ways, and I have become a better worker for it. My attitude toward work is that, “‘I am done when the work is done,’ not ‘the work is done when I am done.’”
