About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2020 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 scorers of more than 1.6 million students who entered the 2020 competition by taking the 2018 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). "Austin has demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success," commented a spokesperson for NMSC. As a member of the Tri-M Music Honors Society, Austin worked with a team of like-minded individuals to promote music and hope through service. He caroled the streets at Christmastime, attended a leadership conference, and performed at Golisano Children's Hospital in Syracuse, NY. Austin wore a pink cord at his graduation ceremony to represent his commitment to volunteerism, altruism, and the promotion of music.

Principal's Cabinet
Austin participated in his high school's Principal's Cabinet from 10th-12th grade (CNS High School is a 3 year high school). This club taught him many rewarding lessons about leadership and teamwork throughout the years. He helped organize fundraisers, such as the Paige's Butterfly Run fundraiser to help make gift packages for children with cancer. He helped stage manage the annual Mr. CNS male pageant, where he assisted the cast and crew with a plethora of tasks which varied by year. He organized school spirit weeks, attended cabinet overnights, and once spent 72 hours in the Adirondacks at the STAR Leadership Camp. This camp helped him discover his call to lead as well as his need to find connection and community with others. Even after graduation, he still consistently interacts with this wonderful community of students and staff!.

Musical Theatre
Austin was involved in the musicals and plays in his district from the age of 10. His high school shows were "Singin' In The Rain," "Oklahoma," "Newsies," and "You Can't Take It With You." Austin was awarded the Gypsy award by his castmates and the stage crew in his sophomore year for being a team player and for being someone who is easy to work with because they bring a positive attitude to the theatre.

Lead Building Monitor at Belmont University School of Music

As a Lead Building Monitor, Austin takes on the responsibilities of a School Of Music Building Monitor as well as the administrative duties that are associated with his new position as a Lead Building Monitor. As a Building Monitor, he works at the front desks of the music buildings across Belmont's campus. On a formal basis, he signs students into practice rooms, maintains COVID-19 sanitization standards, maintains the cleanliness and order of the practice rooms, keeps doors in the buildings locked and unlocked at the proper times for the convenience of the students, staff, and faculty, and performs hourly rounds on the buildings.

On an informal basis, he interacts with the students, staff, and faculty in the school of music. Working with people has always been a passion of his, and this position proves to be no exception. He has done everything from directing students to the proper room or person to giving prospective students and families tours of the facilities. He takes on miscellaneous roles that may vary depending upon the needs of the day. For example, he has transported walkies across campus, assembled piano benches, and even spent time reviewing the wonderfully impressionistic artwork of one of Belmont's very talented custodians!

As a Lead Monitor, Austin performs all of the aforementioned responsibilities as well as several administrative roles within the SOM. He schedules shifts for all of the monitors, adjusts shifts if anyone ever needs to trade or cancel a shift, manages the communications sent out to the Building Monitors, resolves any potential conflicts that may arise, engages in monthly meetings with his fellow lead monitors and head bosses to discuss any changes needed within the FWS program, and helps to lead any conferences with all of the Building Monitors over zoom. He doesn't take these responsibilities lightly and is honored to have a role in shaping the future of Belmont's amazing School of Music.
