My name is Ava McKinney, I am a junior at Miami University majoring in Social Work and minoring in Disability Studies. I am very passionate when it comes to helping other people. I have shown this passion of mine through the various volunteer opportunities that I take part in, including Circle K International (CKI), Oxford's Women Care Center, and the Fireman's Cheer Fund. Each of these opportunities has given me a better understanding and perspective on various skills that I can use in the social work field. Along with my volunteering experience, I am also involved in different organizations around campus, including Alpha Delta Pi Sorority, Phi Alpha National Social Work Honor Society, as well as captain of the Intramural volleyball team. I have also received the opportunity of being a part of the Marriage and Family Research Team with my Professor here at Miami. Through my various experiences as working as a sales associate in retail, I have gained numerous skills, such as communicating effectively with others, being able to work with a team, working hard at any task I am given, and keeping various things in an organized manner.

Activities

Students For Life, M.U.

I recently became a member of the Students for Life organization at Miami University. Every other Tuesday we come together as a group to organize different fundraisers, hold events, and talk about the different stances on abortion. We have done sidewalk chalking, put up flyers, did table-talking, and went to the Planned Parenthood in Cincinnati to pray for the women entering the facility. I chose to be apart of this club because this is something that I am very passionate about, especially with my religious beliefs.

Intramural volleyball

During the fall semester of my freshmen year, I was captain of my intramural volleyball team. We played a game every Sunday night against other teams at Philips Hall. It was a great experience to meet new people and play the sport that I grew up in.

Volleyball

I played the sport of volleyball throughout my years of high school. My position on the team was libero. I was captain of the volleyball team during my junior season. I also received the Bulldog Award during my senior season for my display of leadership skills and always showing a positive attitude towards other teammates.
