Bharath Hebbe Madhusudhana

Majored in Physics
Georgia Institute of Technology, Class of 2018
From Munich Area, Germany, India
My broad, long term research objective is to pick up abstract ideas from mathematics, understand how they transcend into the theoretical model of a physical system and finally, explore in the laboratory, any experimentally observable consequence of it. In particular, the experimental system I work with is Bose-Einstein Condensates. Experiments that emerge from mathematical structure of the theory not only bear a fundamental value, but they also lead to technical applications. The essence of a mathematical concept is captured by a set of abstract ideas and therefore, their repercussions in the theoretical model of a physical system reveals a fundamental property of the system. For instance, the abstract topological properties of a space, appear in the form of topological phases of matter. On the other hand, quantum advantages leading to technical applications, such as quantum metrology, quantum information and quantum communication, all result from the mathematical structure of quantum mechanics. During my time as a graduate student in Prof. Michael Chapmans lab, I have gained experience building atom trapping and cooling experiments, controlling the internal state of the atoms and data acquisition. I have also gained an insight into some mathematical areas during my course work as a Masters student in mathematics at Georgia Institute of Technology and my masters thesis work on real algebraic geometry under the supervision of Prof. Greg Blekherman.
