College Mentors for Kids

College Mentors for Kids is a program that pairs a James Madison University student to a child from a local elementary school in Harrisonburg. We spend 2 hours each Tuesday doing hands on activities and teaching our "little buddies" about a variety different subjects. We have a college question of the day, activities and journaling time.

4-H

4-H allows youth to engage in activities in a variety of different areas (Public Speaking, Leadership, Community Service, Agriculture, STEM, Health etc.) I became a member of 4-H in 4th grade. I was very involved in public speaking, leadership, and community service activities. I participated in presentations on topics ranging from, Photography, All About Olive Oil, Running Your First Half Marathon, and Making Your Very Own Heat Press T-shirt at the state level. I served as Secretary and President of the Abingdon High School 4-H Club and Virginia 4-H State Secretary. I volunteered at the Washington County Fairgrounds and served as a 4-H Camp Counselor. 4-H was an amazing organization that allowed me to become a more involved citizen and make some of the best friends imaginable.

Art Portfolio Club

Abingdon High School's Art Portfolio Club received photographs of children in other countries. The years that I participated, my "Art Pals" were from Nepal, India, and Bolivia. Each person in the club used creative art mediums, and the finished product was a portrait to send back to their "Art Pal", along with a letter and picture of themselves.
