Assistant Professor of Art, Division of Creative Arts & Humanities at Elmira College
From Elmira, NY
Chris Longwell is an artist and art educator. His ceramic works are exhibited nationally at venues such as the Society for Contemporary Craft, Pittsburgh, PA), the M.T. Burton Gallery, Surf City, NJ, and Charlie Cummings Gallery, Gainesville, FL . His work has been published in numerous books (Lark Books 500 Cups; 500 Pitchers) and magazines (Ceramics Monthly, Ceramics:Art and Perception). A recent one-man exhibition was installed in the gallery at Clayscapes, Syracuse, NY.
Four years of teaching high school art at Notre Dame High School has provided Professor Longwell with the experience to mentor art education majors at Elmira College. As gallery director, he reaches out into the international, national and regional art communities to bring the artwork of artists to campus. Recent shows include One Billionth of a Meter: An International Show of Nano Artists"; Ceramics Invitational; Sculpture and Paintings by David Hayes; and works from the collection of children's book author/illustrator Tedd Arnold.
In addition to exhibiting work, Professor Longwell is also involved in community organizations that utilize his expertise in art, including the Arnot Art Museum, Catholic Charities' Empty Bowls Project, Tanglewood Nature Center (Board member) and the ARTS of the Southern Finger Lakes.
The ARTS Council of the Southern Finger Lakes recognized Professor Longwell and Heroes Your Mom Threw Out Comic Shop (Jared Aiosa, proprietor) of Elmira Heights as the 2012 recipients of The ARTS Council's annual ARTS Partnership Awards. The ARTS Partnership Awards recognize individuals, artists, volunteers, schools, organizations and businesses that significantly contribute to the region's arts and cultural life.
Also in 2012 Catholic Charities of Chemung and Schuyler Counties honored Professor Longwell as Advocate of the Year for his dedication to the organization over the last seven years. The even more significant honor was that Catholic Charities decided to name an award after him and one other donor. The Longwell-McClure award will be given annually at the Empty Bowls event.
In 2015 the ARTS Council of the Southern Finger Lakes awarded Professor Longwell with the Artist Crossroads Grant to create a ceramic mural at Tanglewood Museum and Nature Center. This project combines his love of art, nature and community.
