Daniel D'Arcy
As a political scientist and meteorologist, I believe the confluence of politics and weather offers the optimum research nexus for addressing climate change. In May 2016, I graduate with a Master's of Science in Public Policy from Georgia Tech, where I am also currently a Research Assistant in the Climate and Energy Policy Lab. Findings from topics studied will appear in Department of Energy and National Academies of Sciences publications, as well as in the International Encyclopedia of Geography. These publications discuss the unique challenges associated with decommissioning power plants, provide guidance for cities seeking sustainability, and explore the relationship between energy and geography. The interdisciplinary nature of my masters program provided me with the benefit of also enrolling in International Affairs, Industrial Engineering, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, and City Planning courses.
As an environmental policy analyst intern with the Center for Effective Government, I communicated with a broad audience. I directed readers to the organizations website through blogs that discussed federal environmental legislation from the much debated Clean Power Plan to the little-known National Weather Service Improvement Act. During my internship, I also created a chemical plant accidents counter that recorded summer 2015 incidents. This counter is featured on the website of the Coalition to Prevent Chemical Disasters, a union of over 100 organizations.
I received Bachelor's of Science degrees in Meteorology and Political Science, and a minor in math from Florida State University. The completion of STEM courses has enabled me to complement my deep understanding of policy concerns associated with climate change while also comprehending climate science.
