The Contemplative Space Committee
The Contemplative Space Committee was a committee which consisted of students, professors, faculty members and impressively the President of SUNY New Paltz, Donald P. Christian. After the College Council voted to change the names of the buildings from what was formally known as the the Hasbrouck complex quad, some folks thought it wasn't enough to change the names, but to also acknowledge the lives of those who where enslaved as well as the history of the Huguenot slave owners/patentees. We met with President Christian and as a committee we decided to divide the committee into two sub-committees ;"content" and "audience connection." The "audience connection" worked on potential site locations, design of the structure, and the desired experience of visitors. The "content" focused on different ways of delivering the history of that content. In conclusion, we came up with a proposal that acknowledged the history of those who were enslaved and the Huguenot slave-holding patentees in both a tangible and non-tangible manner. The proposal listed potential physical places to create a memorial as well as the idea of creating an archive from all the research we did as a committee. The proposal was submitted to the office of President Christian on April 22, 2019.
