Hello There! My name is Emily Rudderow. I am currently a freshman working toward a dual certification in Elementary & Special Education at Kutztown University of PA. I am passionate about advocating for young children and being a resource to them.
SPU 318 South Africa Study Abroad. During this study abroad we not only completed the course work that was aligned with the Literacy Development and Interventions Course, but we also took that knowledge and applied to real life students in South Africa. We partnered with One Heart Source to be on their team of two week Youth Empowerment Volunteers, to bring specified literacy intervention to struggling grade five students.
Volunteered as a part of One Heart Source's two week Youth Empowerment Program in Cape Town, South Africa. This volunteer program also aligned with the SPU 318 literacy intervention curriculum at Kutztown University. As a volunteer, I worked with two students that have difficulties in comprehension and literacy and I was able to develop intervention plans and materials that would yield the highest level of success in each student. Over the course of the program I was able to administer DRA's to the students, create in depth case studies, design appropriate materials to be used on a long term base and create bonds that will last a lifetime. This program not only made me more culturally aware but it also exposed me to the many differences in the educational system and the discrepancies that students with disabilities are facing.
I am employed by the University to supply notes in an ordered and clear manner to students that are registered with the Disability Services Office.
