Helping faculty engage doctoral students using the Five Cs model
Poster presentation with Dr. Sara Nasrollahian at the Professional and Organization Development (POD) Conference - Nov. 13-17, 2019 - Pittsburgh, PA. ABSTRACT: Roughly one-half of all doctoral students will fail to graduate. Scholars have examined this phenomenon from various angels, with literature suggesting engagement with faculty is an essential aspect in retaining and graduating doctoral students. This poster will provide practical strategies in how faculty developers can assist graduate faculty in developing their knowledge and skills in fostering engagement with doctoral students. Specifically, the poster will present a model, informed by adult learning, relational teaching-learning, and collaborative communication, that fosters engagement through the areas of course design, assessment, facilitation, critical reflection, and inclusivity.
