Haley Loftis

The University of Alabama, Class of 2018
From Kansas City, MO
I'm currently a student at the University of Alabama. I am majoring in Electrical Engineering with minors in Computer Based Honors, Mathematics, and German. In addition, I'm part of the STEM Path to MBA Program. The STEM Path to MBA is a 5 year MBA program aimed towards students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics majors. As part of the program, I take one business class with fellow STEM students each semester of my undergraduate years. I was accepted into the graduate program in the Spring of 2016 and began graduate coursework the following summer. In addition to being a minor, Computer Based Honors is an undergraduate research program. During the 2013-2014 school year I took the freshman courses for the program that prepare students for research, in addition to learning Fortran in the fall and C++ in the spring. I conducted research in the topic of the feasibility of indoor solar implementations with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering during the following two years. As part of the program requirements, I gave a live broadcast about my research in the fall, and a poster presentation in the spring of those academic year. On campus I am also a member of Kappa Alpha Theta, the Honors College, Eta Kappa Nu, and the University's chapter of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), for which I serve as the Chair. Over the summer of 2014 I interned in the Marketing Department of the Energy Division of Burns & McDonnell at their Kansas City office. I was able to become familiar with the company, network, and gain exposure to the Electrical Department of the division and power systems. I returned to the Energy Division at Burns & McDonnell over the summers of 2015 and 2016 and interned in the Electrical Department, furthering my technical knowledge of the design of power systems.
