Majoring in Communication Studies, Minoring in Philosophy, Political Science, Music
University of Iowa, Class of 2020
From Iowa City, IA
My name is Javon Stovall and I am a student at the University of Iowa. Over the course of my collegiate education, I've worked to pair my degree with a unique amount of work experience that I know makes me a different kind of candidate. My work experience has been on and off campus, in a variety of environments, which has given me the ability to problem solve by looking at issues from multiple angles. In addition to a student and employee, I'm also a leader. I've been demonstrating this in numerous capacities since a young age, taking on leadership roles in a wide range of capacities - whatever I was interested in at the time. In college, I've helped found an acappella group and immediately became a student leader, teaching music and learning from my peers on a whole new level. In the fall of 2017, I began developing my own student leadership curriculum, which I plan on teaching to future student leaders. The confidence my musical experience has instilled in me has led to several speaking engagements, including pageants and eventually an academic lecture on campus about intersectionality and the student experience at Iowa. I have, as of late, begun looking at post-graduate careers in higher education in student affairs. I plan to study how intersectional identities can affect secondary and college experiences for students. The dynamic and meaningful aspects of this area of study draw me because I thrive in environments where every day is something new. Gallup Strengthsquest results: Woo, Communication, Positivity, Futuristic, Includer.

Old Gold Show Choir
As the director of Old Gold Acappella, I lead a group of about 25 singers in perfecting choral tone, technique, balance, and blend. I am the spokesperson and community representative, providing a vision for short term solutions as well as long-term growth. My administrative duties include liaising between our student organization and University administration, procuring musical arrangements, etc. My musical duties include directing rehearsal, directing sectionals, interpreting and arranging music, and determining voicing for the group. Because of the unique situation of our transition from a different format (show choir), I spearheaded the effort to write the organization's constitution and set up a framework for future successes of the organization.
