As a child, I had dreams of being a hero. Whizzing around corners and buzzing through my mother's arms, I zoomed around the house with a towel cape, saving the day. Idyllic childhood ambitions soon faced harsh reality when my parents' struggles with substance abuse taught me that sometimes even Superman loses. As a six-year-old boy with a shattered self-image, I tried to put the pieces of my life back together as best as any six-year-old boy could. Even though my parents and extended family were present in my life, I was alone. I was desperately trying to find a real-life hero to save me from being a victim of the substance abuse of my parents and the horrible circumstances that always came with it. The heroes I found didn't wear capes or even have superpowers, but they showed up and subdued the chaos when called. These moments were when I realized that being a hero was not about being Superman or Optimus Prime, but about being a cop. After middle school, my decision to apply to the Dallas ISD Law Magnet fulfilled a life dream come true. I was on my way to becoming the hero I always knew was inside me. Sadly, however, life had other plans. Now I am 43 years old, and I may not have been the hero I dreamed I would be; however, I found other ways to help and save people in my career as a Real Estate Broker. Sure, I will admit, being a Real Estate Broker doesn't sound like the thrilling start of a superhero story, but neither does being a reporter at the "Planet" newspaper. I created a niche for myself working with some of the most complicated real estate transactions one can work. For example, I often work with families facing foreclosure on an FHA mortgage because of the loss of a breadwinner in a tragic accident. The legal aid society might call upon me to work with a woman going through a highly contested divorce who risks losing her home. These are examples of how I have saved the day for my clients in their time of need. Life may have thrown me for a time or two; however, I have never lost my desire to help others. With the experience and knowledge I've gained over 15 years in real estate, that desire seems to be getting stronger. I recognize this drive within me and have decided it's time to do something about it. In the Summer of 2021, I enrolled back in school to earn my B.A. in psychology with a concentration in forensic psychology. I never completed my degree when I was younger because of some tragic circumstances I had to face, which proved life has a way of changing the best-laid plans. I plan to earn my degree and head off to law school. It is time to take my real estate experience, combine it with my forensic psychology knowledge, and become a hero helping people involved with law enforcement or in a courtroom. I'm looking forward to being an expert witness for a victim who had her home equity stolen by a property vulture disguised as a real estate investor. Maybe I can help with the jury selection or consultation against a predatory mortgage lender. I could help advocate for consumer protections against unscrupulous real estate agents who put themselves before their clients. Life may not have panned out as I had planned, but I've recognized my talents, developed my skills, and tried to take advantage of opportunities as they came. My career path may be non-traditional or non-linear, but my passion has stayed strong and true. The difference now is I have the experience to utilize my passion that only comes with the maturity of time.
