Kris has been engaged in appellate practice for the Kansas Attorney Generals Office for over eighteen years, starting as an Assistant Attorney General in the Criminal Litigation Division in October of 2000. Kris is currently the Deputy Solicitor General and is the chief of the criminal appellate section, overseeing criminal appellate practice in both the state and federal courts. He has filed briefs and argued numerous cases before the Kansas Court of Appeals, the Kansas Supreme Court, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit, and has co-authored several briefs submitted to the United States Supreme Court (including the death penalty cases of Kansas v. Marsh, Kansas v. Cheever, Kansas v. Gleason, Kansas v. Jonathan Carr, and Kansas v. Reginald Carr). Kris also serves as an officer in the U.S. Army Reserve. His military service includes deployments to Kosovo, Iraq, Afghanistan, Africa, and South America. In 2008, he was the Deputy Rule of Law Advisor for the Iraqi province of Kirkuk, and from January to April, 2011, he worked as part of the U.S. Embassys Rule of Law Interagency Planning and Implementation Team in Kabul, Afghanistan. He spent three years assigned as a civil-military operations planner at the Joint Enabling Capabilities Command in Norfolk, VA, and is one of very few joint qualified officers in the Army Reserve. Following a successful two-year tour as the commander of the 3/290th Training Support Battalion based in Mustang, Oklahoma, he returned to the Joint Enabling Capabilities Command in Norfolk until selected for promotion to Colonel. He was then assigned to the 321st Civil Affairs Brigade. While at the 321st, he served as the senior representative for US Army South in subject matter expert exchanges in Lima, Peru, involving the Peruvian and Colombian armies, and acted as the brigade lead in the multinational PANAMAX exercise. In 2018, he took command of the 208th Digital Liaison Detachment, whose mission is to act as the liaison between U.S. Army forces and foreign partner armies.
