The Effect of Coping Mechanisms and Stress on Self-Esteem and Self-Concept in College Students
Throughout their daily routine, college students face a variety of stressors. How a student copes with the amount of stress they face can affect several aspects of their life, such as their academics or their health. In this study we sought to examine the impact that stress had upon college students’ self-esteem and self-concept as well as the impact that task-oriented, emotion-oriented, and avoidance-oriented coping mechanisms had upon students’ self-esteem and self-concept. Forty-nine undergraduate students at a private Midwestern University completed an online survey. Along with a few demographic questions, the survey was made up of four different scales: Perceived Stress Scale – Revised, Self-Concept Clarity Scale, Rosenberg’s Self-Esteem Scale, and Revised Coping with Academic Demands. We found that a high amount of perceived stress predicted lower self-esteem and lower self-concept clarity. We also found that higher use of task and emotion-oriented coping mechanisms predicted higher self-esteem, while there was only a trend for a relationship showing high use of avoidance-oriented coping predicted lower self-esteem. No coping mechanisms were significantly related to self-concept. Self-esteem has been shown in previous studies to positively impact both academic performance and mental health in students (Eisenbarth, 2012; Kariv & Heiman, 2005). Thus, this study shows evidence that stress and coping mechanisms can also significantly impact academic performance and mental health through their relationship with self-esteem. Therefore, improving student’s coping strategies can help counteract the negative effects of stress on self-esteem.

Attitudes around Affirmative Action in Undergraduate Students
Affirmative Action policies in the United States have been a point of contention and a highly debated topic for many years. Some people support the policies stating that they make up for past wrong doings or that they help enhance educational experiences (Marichal, 2008). Others find these policies to be unfair. This study sought to examine what affected people’s different views on this policy. The study sought to imitate a study by Fuguere Cathey, Beetham, Haynes, and Schaedler (2016) who examined the effect of labeling on such policies. Additionally, it sought to examine the effects of different individual attributes upon attitudes. Twenty-five undergraduate students at a private Midwestern University completed an online survey to assess these different attitudes and attributes. Tests between variables were done using between-subject ANOVAs, linear regressions, and paired-sample T-tests. Results indicated that there was less support for Affirmative Action policies than for policies under a different label, Diversity Policies. They also indicated that Affirmative Action policies were more strongly associated with ideas of reverse discrimination than Diversity Policies. These findings indicate a negative connotation and association with the label Affirmative Action that could carry over into work environments. Furthermore, this negative association could be a result of the relationship seen between Affirmative Action policies and reverse discrimination.
